Starting from the traditional settlement of Chora, which you will cross enjoying its particular residential environment, you will soon end up in the square with the windmills. Once they worked to grind the cereals (genimata for the locals) produced by the island and today they are “humble” monuments of cultural heritage and remind us of the food production cycle.A little further you will find the complex of modern cultural heritage, which consists of the Odysseas Elytis Theater and the Gaitis Museum.The open-air theater has been built following the ancient Greek type and offers a stunning view of the Aegean and the museum is a sample of modern architectural heritage due to its special aspects, which house white sculpted human figures.
After leaving behind the chapel of Agios Dimitrios the tour develops into a landscape with hills and rocks offering excellent views to Mylopotas Bay. Look for the elements of agricultural heritage and at some point you will discover the threshing floors. Look for the geological formations of the landscape and enjoy the view to the neighboring Sikinos.After a short walkon the asphalt road network you will reach the traditional cheese factory, where you can enjoy a taste experience. Then, enjoying the view to the northeastern beaches and after passing the chapel of Agios Georgios, you will end up at the Monastery of Agios Ioannis, which is located on the outskirts of the highest peak of the island (Pyrgos).

USEFUL INFORMATION ON HIKING

Clothes vary depending on the season, the duration of the journey and the type of ground along each route. During the walk clothes should be very light especially during the summer months when the temperature is high.
Clothes should be light-colored so that they are easily located in case of accident. In spring and autumn, warmer clothes (windbreaker-fleece) are used only during stops and rarely during hiking. Hiking in Ios is also possible in winter with a high probability of rain and wind. There should always be a raincoat in your bag for these seasons!

 

On most routes the simple trekking shoes with flexible soles are suitable for summer and for walks up to 2-3 hours. For those who want more safety, the semi-rigid boots that cover the ankles are recommended and are suitable all year round and for long walks.
Sunglasses, a hat with a visor or a neck cover, sunscreen, long pants and a walking stick complete the equipment. Also, it is best not to walk alone first and secondly in the noon and afternoon hours during the summer months. Always have a first aid kit and a headlamp with you. Plenty of water and a charged cell phone are definitely a must!
