Route 1(circular)

Chora - Skarkos - Epano Kampos area - Agia Triada - Agios Prokopios - Agios Spyridon - Chora

Starting from the traditional settlement of Chora, which you will cross enjoying the special residential environment and the majestic churches with blue domes, you will soon end up in a landscape with dry stone steps and a point overlooking the hill of the three churches. Now you will hike in the mainland of the island where elements of agricultural heritage, such as the country cottages (etzieres as the locals call them) and arable land in berms dominate.Your next stop is the imposing archeological site of Skarkos, a characteristic settlement of the Cycladic Civilization (3rd millennium BC), which is organized around the top of a hill. Then the tour between the relief slopes of slate will reveal the toil of life in the countryside, where you will meet small rural settlements on the plateau of EpanoKampos. The characteristic chapels of the countryside, such as Agia Triada and Agios Prokopios, are places of rest and contemplation during your tour.Your return to Chora passes through places with a special view of the orchards and the Bay of Ios, which hosts in its calm waters the port of the island. In the church of Agios Spyridon you will now be at the junction with your initial route and in a few meters you will have completed your hiking experience!

Tours to Ios will reveal the natural and cultural heritage of the island. It is reminded that the use of the Hiking Network is at your own risk and please observe the rules for preserving nature!

USEFUL INFORMATION ON HIKING

Clothes vary depending on the season, the duration of the journey and the type of ground along each route. During the walk clothes should be very light especially during the summer months when the temperature is high.
Clothes should be light-colored so that they are easily located in case of accident. In spring and autumn, warmer clothes (windbreaker-fleece) are used only during stops and rarely during hiking. Hiking in Ios is also possible in winter with a high probability of rain and wind. There should always be a raincoat in your bag for these seasons!

On most routes the simple trekking shoes with flexible soles are suitable for summer and for walks up to 2-3 hours. For those who want more safety, the semi-rigid boots that cover the ankles are recommended and are suitable all year round and for long walks.
Sunglasses, a hat with a visor or a neck cover, sunscreen, long pants and a walking stick complete the equipment. Also, it is best not to walk alone first and secondly in the noon and afternoon hours during the summer months. Always have a first aid kit and a headlamp with you. Plenty of water and a charged cell phone are definitely a must!
