Starting from the traditional settlement of Chora, whose spectacular residential environment you will cross, you will soon end up in the square with the windmills. They were used to grind the cereals (local produce) that the island produced and today they have become “humble” monuments of cultural heritage and remind us of the food production cycle. A little further you will find the complex of modern cultural heritage, which consists of the Odysseas Elytis Theater and the Gaitis Museum.
The open-air theater has been built following the ancient Greek type and offers a stunning view of the Aegean. The museum is a sample of modern architectural heritage, due to its extraordinary aspects, which house white sculpted human figures. After leaving behind the chapel of Agios Dimitrios, the tour develops into a landscape sculpted by man in order to cultivate the earth (landscape with steps). On your way to the mainland do not forget to look back to enjoy the unique view to Chora and the Bay of Ios. After hiking on a unpaved road you will ascend to the top of Profitis Ilias (almost 500m. altitude), from where the view also extends in a north-eastern direction. Returning from the same unpaved road and after moving for a while on a path next to the asphalt road network you will soon cross Route 1 in Agios Prokopios, from where you can return to Chora. USEFUL INFORMATION ON HIKING
Clothes vary depending on the season, the duration of the journey and the type of ground along each route. During the walk clothes should be very light especially during the summer months when the temperature is high.
Clothes should be light-colored so that they are easily located in case of accident. In spring and autumn, warmer clothes (windbreaker-fleece) are used only during stops and rarely during hiking. Hiking in Ios is also possible in winter with a high probability of rain and wind. There should always be a raincoat in your bag for these seasons!
On most routes the simple trekking shoes with flexible soles are suitable for summer and for walks up to 2-3 hours. For those who want more safety, the semi-rigid boots that cover the ankles are recommended and are suitable all year round and for long walks.
Sunglasses, a hat with a visor or a neck cover, sunscreen, long pants and a walking stick complete the equipment. Also, it is best not to walk alone first and secondly in the noon and afternoon hours during the summer months. Always have a first aid kit and a headlamp with you. Plenty of water and a charged cell phone are definitely a must!
